I always dreamed of this tank, as something impossible to own when I saw it at the parades, till one day I changed this masterpiece of Russian engineering against another old-timer.

When I got this Russian tank it was practically new (1000 km), but had severe damages in the hydraulic system.

That’s why the army sold it. We had to built a new hydraulic cylinder and to exchange several parts. Also the carburetor I changed against a new one (some membrane was broken).

After that we made a complete service according the service manual (300 pages). There is nothing we didn’t disassemble and check. The engine is now working so smoothly that after starting you don’t hear in the cabin if it is running or not.

This tank is extremely rare and there is nobody I know having one completely equipped, because the army normally dismounts all equipment. Most owners damaged their tanks by driving it with the old army oil, because they believe that service had been done.

Most of them destroyed the engines. We disassembled immediately and found that there was still the original oil from 1977. Luckily we didn’t drive it, otherwise we would have destroyed the engine as well. The tank was just standing on stock at the army, as the army wasn’t able to repair the hydraulic damage. That’s why the tank is in such good condition.

We drove with great care about 500 km (mostly highway) since the repair and never went into water. The tank is standing in a garage and is exactly in the conditions the pictures show.

Since then I spent a lot of time admiring the efforts necessary to built just one of those vehicles. The special steel (Chrome Vanadium) is so hard that when I wanted to drill a small hole for the number plate the steel was exactly as hard as the driller. I was just able to scratch the painting.

Russian tank for rent or hire.

You can rent this Russian tank for movies and special events.

The tank is registered and can drive or be transported to any location in Europe.

I have the rockets as well, of course deactivated. My friend has the complete functioning Sagger simulator, mounted in a Zil truck.

In this simulator you are playing actually the first Computer game from the 1960's with joystick and 3.000 W of valve power. That’s real fun.

The BRDM-2 was designed in the early 1960's as a replacement for the BRDM-1.

Hull
The hull is constructed of welded steel.  The driver and commander are seated in the front of the vehicle with the commander on the right and the driver on the left.  Both have bullet proof windshields with a armored shutter that is hinged at the top.  Behind the driver and commander are 2 circular hatches, these provide the only means of entry to the vehicle.  A firing port and 3 vision blocks are located on each side of the hull allowing some visibility to the sides and rear.
The engine compartment is located at the rear of the vehicle and is separated from the crew by a bulkhead.  There are 2 air inlets at the forward part of the engine compartment and 4 at the rear. Exhaust pipes are located on either side of the hull.  The suspension is composed of leaf springs and 2 hydraulic shocks per wheel.   Between the main wheels on either side are 2 chain driven belly wheels.  These can be lowered by the driver for improved cross-country performance and to allow ditch crossing.  The vehicle is also fully amphibious being propelled in the water by a single, rear mounted water jet.

BRDM-2 with AT-3 Sagger
This version has it's turret removed and is fitted with 6 Sagger missiles on the roof.  When traveling they are retracted into the hull then elevated for launching.  These missiles can also be fired up to 80 m away using a separation sight.  The missiles are flown to the target using a joystick by the commander sitting at the right front to the vehicle.  Eight extra missiles are carried in the hull.

On BRDM/BRDM-2 scout vehicles launch rails are mounted on the underside of the retractable armored cover, with eight additional missiles carried inside the vehicle. The retractable launcher on the BRDM-2 vehicle has the ability to traverse 70 degrees to the left or right with elevation varying from 3.5 to 17 degrees.

The SAGGER is capable of engaging targets at ranges of 500 to 3,000 meters and can penetrate over 400 mm of armor. As with the SWATTER, the SAGGER uses manual command to line of sight (MCLOS) guidance system in which the operator must observe both missile and target and guide the one towards the other.
The improved SAGGER-C was fitted with semi-automatic command line of sight (SACLOS) guidance to serve as an interim until the AT-5 SPANDREL and AT-6 SPIRAL entered service. The guidance panel can be located up to 15 meters from the launcher, and can control up to four launchers. If a target is 1,000 meters from launcher, the operator can joystick the missile to target without using optics. The guidance elevation (°) is -5/ +10. Because the module is small and can be shifted, elevation and field of view are operationally unlimited. Improved versions can be used on older launchers, but in the MCLOS mode.
The SAGGER A or B gunner must visually track target and missile simultaneously, which requires extensive training and constant practice. Although the missile leaves the launcher armed and can detonate and kill at very short range, it can be captured by the gunner only at ranges of 500 to 800 meters. Under combat conditions, however, most gunners probably will be able to engage targets successfully only between 1,000 and 3,000 meters. The missile has a very long flight time to the target (12.5 seconds to 1,500 meters; 25 seconds to 3,000 meters), and evasive action is effective against it, especially at long ranges. Although a SAGGER launching gives off a cloud of gray smoke and a loud roar, this signature is difficult to detect on the battlefield. The wire-guided missile is invulnerable to electronic countermeasures and has a very small percentage of malfunctions.

BRDM/BRDM-2 SAGGERs are found in the Russian antitank battery of motorized rifle regiments, in the antitank battalion of motorized rifle and tank divisions, and in the antitank regiment of artillery divisions. The BRDM/BRDM-2 vehicles have a reaction time of one minute to fire from a completely buttoned-up mode. Six missiles can be fired without reloading, and eight additional missiles are carried inside the vehicle. Successive missiles can be fired and tracked within five seconds of the previous missile's impact. The gunner can operate either from within the vehicle or from a remote position up to 80 meters away. The two-man crew (commander/gunner and driver) also has assault rifles and an RPG-7 antitank grenade launcher.
